Student Advisement

Student Advisement Center (SAC) for Educator Preparation Programs

At Mississippi Valley State University, the Student Advisement Center (SAC) within the MVSU Education Department provides comprehensive support services for all students pursuing degrees in education. Our mission is to ensure that every student receives the guidance, resources, and support they need to successfully navigate their educational journey from admission to degree completion.

Advisement Services for Education Students
The SAC offers personalized advisement services tailored to the needs of undergraduate and graduate students in education programs, including those in the Bachelor of Science in Education and the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) programs. Our services include:

  • Initial Advisement and Academic Planning:

    • Upon enrollment, students are assigned faculty advisors who provide personalized guidance on course selection, degree requirements, and program progression.

    • The SAC provides additional support to ensure students are aware of program expectations, licensure requirements, and academic resources.

  • Support for Transfer Students:

    • The SAC carefully evaluates the transcripts of transfer students to determine how previous coursework aligns with MVSU’s education programs.

    • Transfer students receive guidance on fulfilling any remaining course requirements and meeting program-specific criteria.

  • Pre-Candidacy Monitoring:

    • During the pre-candidacy phase, the SAC monitors students' progress toward meeting the admission criteria for the Educator Preparation Program (EPP). This includes:

      • Verifying ACT/SAT scores or Praxis Core Exam scores.

      • Monitoring the 60-hour GPA requirement for eligibility.

      • Providing students with access to test preparation resources and guidance for meeting testing benchmarks.

  • Candidate Screening Process:

    • The SAC facilitates the Candidate Screening process for students seeking admission to the Educator Preparation Program (EPP).

    • Students are guided in preparing their screening portfolios, which include letters of recommendation, a personal philosophy of education statement, test score reports, and a writing sample.

    • The SAC ensures that students understand the requirements and expectations for successful screening.

  • Brochures and Informational Materials:

    • The SAC maintains an up-to-date collection of brochures, handouts, and online resources related to program admission criteria, certification requirements, and licensure processes.

    • Students have access to printed and digital materials explaining the steps to achieve licensure and complete their degree programs.

  • Ongoing Support Through Degree Completion:

    • The SAC continues to provide advisement services throughout the student’s academic journey.

    • Students receive guidance on preparing for state licensure examinations (Praxis Core, Praxis II, Principles of Learning and Teaching, and Foundations of Reading).
