A Message from the Chair,

Dear prospective student, we are delighed that you are interested in the Department of Natural Sciences & Environmental Health (NSEH) here at Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU). On behalf of the faculty and staff of NSEH, I welcome you to MVSU and NSEH--- the Oasis of Sciences in the Delta. You have made a great scholastic choice by deciding to join the Valley of Scholars here at MVSU, where students are second to none. The Department of NSEH boasts 14 faculty members and four adjunct faculty strong; all highly experienced in teaching their respective specialties in the sciences.

NSEH offers three undergraduate programs (Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Health) and a concentration in Science Education, as well as two graduate programs (Bioinformatics and Environmental Health). Our laboratories in the Fielding Wright Building and the New Science and Technology Center are furnished with modern teaching and research equipment. Faculty conduct research in the areas of Cell Biology, Genetics, Animal Physiology, Plant Physiology, Freshwater studies, Ecology, Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry, Toxicology, etc. Our easy to read and use Academic Map for each program shows students the courses and credit hours required to be completed each semester, as well as for the entire program. Our class sizes are small to average, enabling faculty to provide a one-to-one learning attention and as needed by students. Regular office hours are also available, where students can conference with dedicated Academic Advisors. These dedicated  professionals provide you with needed guidance and academic advisement in their respective programs. Through the MVSU University College, counseling and tutorials are also available to all students in the Department. All of our first and second year students are highly encouraged by the Department and guided by faculty to apply for and participate in summer internships, which help to expose students to a wide range of possibilities in the sciences, while enlightening you with the vast and thrilling World of Science.

Upon degree completion in MVSU’s Department of NSEH, the Oasis of Sciences in the Delta, some of our graduates move on to attend nursing schools to get a BSN, or to dental schools, medical schools, pharmacy schools, graduate schools, chiropractic schools, or teach in regional elementary and high schools, or work with the Environmental Protection Agencies at the state or federal level.
