First Follow Up | Second Follow Up

ying mvsu nclb 2013MVSU NCLB 2013 Summer Reading Institute is a scientific research-based program targeted 20 in-service literacy teachers from grades six to twelve from Greenwood, Leflore, Sunflower, and Greenville public school districts. They are provided with materials and guidance focusing on the best practices in literacy,using the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), following the model designed by the Partnership for the Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers(PARCC), and Mississippi Language Arts Framework.

 The goals of the project are to

(a) expand knowledge of literacy;

(b) use the Common core State Standards as guideline and follow the PARCC model to improve teaching skills to meet the needs of poor readers;

(c) train teachers to use formative and summative assessment to identify students’ strengths and weaknesses and to inform instruction;

(d) enhance technology skills in the literacy classroom; and

(e) develop an interest in scientific research to help teachers make informed decisions on what to teach and how to teach.

 This year, the institute was held during the month of July. We had 18 participants and 9 different presenters.

Follow up sessions will be held in October of 2013 and February of 2014.
