For those with diabetes, these numbers are significantly lower.
Understanding Blood Sugar Ranges: Causes of Fluctuations
Fluctuations in blood sugar occur due to various factors such as diet, exercise, stress, sleep quality, medications, or underlying medical conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or Cushing's syndrome. High and low blood sugar fluctuations can cause damage if not managed properly.
Eating a large meal with high glycemic index foods triggers the release of insulin to regulate blood sugar levels. In individuals with poor glucose regulation, this leads to spikes in blood sugar followed by drops when no carbohydrates are consumed for several hours. This seesaw effect damages organs over time due to increased oxidative stress and inflammation caused by excessive insulin production.

A well-balanced diet is essential for maintaining healthy blood sugar levels. Eating complex carbohydrate-rich foods like whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds provides fiber that slows down digestion thereby preventing rapid spikes in blood glucose. Omega-6 sources like nuts also play a beneficial role but should be consumed in moderation due to excessive intake causing oxidative stress that promotes inflammatory responses detrimental to cardiovascular health and potentially other organs.
The Link Between Sleep Quality and Blood Sugar Levels
Sleep quality significantly impacts blood sugar regulation, contributing to fluctuations when disrupted consistently. A study published by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2019) shows a clear link between reduced sleep duration or lower efficiency of deep slow-wave restorative sleep phase – crucial for hormonal regulation including insulin sensitivity.
To improve both aspects: maintaining regular wake times supports body rhythms and natural production patterns, while implementing physical relaxation techniques reduces cortisol levels; when these are managed well stress is lowered reducing spikes in glucose from adrenaline causing more oxidative damage than the initial rise alone.
