Position Summary:

 

Reporting to the President and serving as a member of the President’s Executive Cabinet; the Provost/Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs is the Chief Academic Officer for the University possessing broad responsibilities for articulating an academic vision which includes providing high-level leadership to all academic areas, and administering and enhancing educational programs reflective of the University’s mission. As Chief Academic Officer of the University, the Provost/Senior Vice President ensures the academic integrity of the University and supports program innovations and methods of delivery that responds timely to a rapidly changing environment while assuring compliance with all accrediting and regulatory agencies.

Essential Functions:

  • Collaborates and directs the efforts of the Academic Administrative Team by fostering and promoting relationships among the Faculty Senate and Constituents to encourage and develop academic initiatives;
  • Advises the President on pertinent issues relating to the University, its governing board and various accrediting agencies; 
  • Administers programs related to degree completion requirements at the undergraduate and graduate levels including academic planning and development, transfer articulation, student retention, honors program, distance education, academic publications (academic catalog, calendar and faculty handbook), and relevant academic student interests;
  • Serves as chief instructional officer for credit and non-credit instruction; and chief instructional officer/liaison to the Board of Trustees of Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning;
  • Oversees compliance with all SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Universities) instructional/faculty related principles;
  • Provides leadership in instructional programming, program development and implementation, program review, articulation and transfer, and establishes/sustains related community partnerships which support the instructional goals of the University; provides leadership and coordination in instructional resources to enhance access to programs (developmental education and adult basic education); monitors research and instructional program review; provides data to faculty for use in curriculum development and revision;
  • Encourages and supports research, grant writing, publishing and other scholarly activities;
  • Provides leadership in developing off-campus academic sites to enhance enrollment and academic program offerings;
  • Collaborates with direct reports in planning, developing and implementing annual budgets;
  • Collaborates with Faculty Senate to assure communication and shared governance for faculty;
  • Oversees the systematic and routine assessment of academic program services to measure and plan continuous improvement; provides leadership in the incorporation of instructional technologies to improve student learning;
  • Reviews and evaluates academic appointments, including reappointments, tenure, promotion, salaries, leaves of absence;
  • Ensures effective and efficient communication with outside constituents including the local, state, and federal agencies and assists the President in relaying and advancing the vision and mission of the University;  
  • Performs other duties delegated by the President

Supervisory Responsibilities:

 

 

The Provost/Senior Vice President provides direct supervision to the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Department Chairs; The Provost/Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs maintains a cooperative work relationship with the Executive Cabinet and the Internal Auditor

An earned Ph.D./terminal degree from an accredited institution with the following requirements:

  • Minimum of ten years work history with substantial successful leadership experience demonstrated by quantifiable; advancement within a present or previous organization;
  • Demonstrated career progression and preparation which aligns with a position of this scope, complexity and scale;
  • Demonstrated experience working with leadership of colleges, institutes, centers of excellence, operational units, or other mission critical entities, as appropriate;
  • Demonstrated experience advancing faculty and fostering an inclusive environment for teaching, learning, and scholarship;
  • Experience in higher education administration is highly expected; with earned or eligibility to earn tenure at Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU); must have a solid record of scholarly achievements

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

 

 

 

Proficient use of computers and appropriate software (Microsoft Office); excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to effectively prioritize and multitask; must possess excellent interpersonal skills, conflict resolution skills, ability to collaborate effectively with personnel at all levels; demonstrated ability to manage teams; experience budgeting; experience in speechwriting and other executive communications; advanced knowledge of policies and best practices in higher education; and the ability to maintain confidentiality
