Marching Band

Thank you for your interest in the Mississippi Valley State University Band. Since its founding, the band has held an important place in the life of the university and throughout the state. It has provided music for athletic events, pep rallies, and special university functions. The Symphonic Band has presented concerts of a cultural and entertainment value to students, faculty and the local community.  Our primary focus is to provide students the educational support needed to become excellent music educators and music performers. Music scholarships are available to both music majors and non-majors. The scholarship amount is determined by audition.

The university has several perform organizations that students may participate in. These include: University Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Percussion Ensemble, Saxophone Quartet, Clarinet Quartet, Brass Choir, Woodwind Quintet.

Audition Requirements:

  • Perform all 12 major scales by memory
     
  • Perform a lyrical or technical etude or solo
     
  • Sight-reading
     
  • Perform any of the 26 Standard Drum Rudiments (percussionists only)
     
  • Perform a lyrical or technical etude or solo on a mallet instrument (percussionists only)
     
  • Tune and perform a brief solo on timpani (percussionists only)

How can I sign up for an audition?

Auditions are available throughout the school year and summer months. You can schedule an appointment by contacting the Director of Bands at kmilton@mvsu.edu.

How will I know if I receive a scholarship after my audition?

The official scholarship contract will be mailed to you within seven days of your audition. The scholarship contract does not go into effect until you have been officially admitted into the university and register for classes.
