Itta Bena— Mississippi Valley State University is pleased to announce at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 1, 2021, the institution will hold its 69th Commencement exercise. This will mark the first time the event has been held in-person since the Fall of 2019.
Dr. Alfred Arrington was a tried and true university administrator who pushed both his students and faculty to succeed while serving as head of the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Department at Mississippi Valley State University.
“He was a wonderful public servant,” said one of his daughters, Michelle Arrington. “He was well-known.”
Dr. Arrington died Tuesday in Greenwood. He was 78.

Mississippi Valley State University's Office of Admissions has been working diligently to prepare prospective students for a virtual high school day.
MVSU's annual high school day will premiere at 2 p.m. Friday, April 9, 2021, on MVSUs official Facebook page and YouTube channel. The event will be hosted by Comedian and MVSU Alum, Famous Amos.
On Thursday, April 15, 2021, Mississippi Valley State University will be a host site for COVID-19 Vaccinations. The Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) will be on campus at 9 a.m. in the Harrison Complex.

The Division of Academic Affairs at Mississippi Valley State University is pleased to announce Deborah Purnell as its 2020-2021 Humanities Teacher of the Year recipient.
"I am honored to be named Teacher of the Year by the Mississippi Humanities Council. This award could only have happened with the support of my department chair and the wonderful administration at Mississippi Valley State University," said Purnell.

The Mississippi Valley State University Upward Bound II Program recently unveiled a new state-of-the-art STEM Lab in the Technical Education Building.
Program Director, Jerome Petty, welcomed a few high school participants and a limited number of spectators to show off all the latest equipment students will have access to use to grow in science, technology, engineering, and math.
Dr. Barbara A. Newsome spent her life as a Social Work educator and advocate for children and families.
Her life’s story of protecting the vulnerable and providing assistance to students, family, and friends ended its final chapter at age 74, on Monday, March 1, 2021, at Greenwood Leflore Hospital when she passed away.

Mississippi Valley State University is slated to host its annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Black History Convocation at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 4, 2021.
The event was initially set for Thursday, February 24, but inclement weather delayed plans, and organizers had to reschedule recordings. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the university will hold the event virtually and premiere it on MVSU's official YouTube channel and Facebook page.
