Team of three MVSU students win $500 microgrant during HBCU leadership conference

ITTA BENA, Miss.—Three Mississippi Valley State University students recently joined forces to secure a $500 microgrant during the 2020 Virtual HBCU Student Leadership Conference.

Hosted July 16-18, the three-day virtual conference was designed for student leaders currently enrolled at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the country.

ITTA BENA, Miss.— A Mississippi Valley State University faculty member is the recent recipient of two distinguished honors.

​Shannon Bowden, an instructor of Speech Communication and vice president of the MVSU’s Faculty Senatewas recently awarded a $24,500 grant award from the Mississippi Delta National Heritage Area (MDNHA) to fund her research project, "Breaking Bread: Itta Bena, MS in the Civil Rights Movement."

MVSU receives 200k grant from Woodward Hines Education Foundation to support students’ success

ITTA BENA, Miss.—Students attending Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU) will benefit from a five-year $200,000 grant commitment from the Woodward Hines Education Foundation (WHEF) to support college retention, persistence, and completion through the Improving Mississippi’s Persistence and Completion Together (IMPACT) initiative. 

Recent MVSU grad Hawkins sets out to change the world through chiropractic

ITTA BENA, Miss.— Brandon Lionelle Hawkins, III. will be the first to tell you that his time at Mississippi Valley State University was filled with highs and lows.

However, during one of those low points— rehabbing from an injury he suffered as a member of the MVSU Baseball team, the DeValls Bluff, Ark., native discovered the path to his future.

MVSU remembers student Jy’Quavious Williams during virtual candlelight vigil

ITTA BENA, Miss.—Mississippi Valley State University students, faculty & staff, alumni and community members came together virtually Wednesday evening to honor the memory of student Jy’Quavious Williams.

Williams passed away unexpectedly June 17. He was 21.

A virtual candlelight vigil for Williams was hosted by the MVSU Student Government Association (SGA), Inc. at 7 p.m. using the videoconferencing platform Zoom.
