Spence Townsend
Assistant Professor of Art

What inspired you to teach?
I began to realize my passion for education while teaching art to second graders at an after-school program several years ago. This experience showed me the transformative power of art education.  I watched these children solve problems visually, and I observed that these skills directly improved their verbal and social skills.  Even though this experience involved second graders, I believe that this basic premise applies to all ages of education.

What do you love about teaching at MVSU?
The students.  All of my students are unique, interesting people. I really enjoy getting to know them and discovering their strengths as artists. It's my job to develop those strengths while pushing them to grow in other areas. They keep me inspired, driven, and focused on offering my best efforts.

Beyond your subject-area or discipline, what do you hope students gain from being in your classroom?
I want my students to become self-sufficient and confident leaders. In our modern society, being an amazing artist will only take you so far. It is equally as important to be able to write and speak about your art. For this reason, I strive for my students to develop great communication and problem-solving skills.
Tell us a fun or interesting fact about yourself.
I am also a musician and I love to write and record original songs.
If you could have dinner with one person, alive or not, who would it be and why?
I would love to have dinner with artist Kerry James Marshall.  He's a huge inspiration.

What is your favorite book and why?
It's hard to pick a favorite. I'm a huge Vonnegut fan. One of the best books I have read lately was Mississippi author Anne Moody's collection of short stories, Mr. Death. The book is hauntingly beautiful.
