Dr. Victor Yuen joined Mississippi Valley State University in Fall 2026 as Assistant Professor of Music. A Hong Kong native, he teaches Music Theory, Aural Skills, Form and Analysis, Arranging, Basic Music Skills, and Music Appreciation. He previously served as a teaching assistant at the University of Kentucky.
Dr. Yuen is a Doctor of Philosophy candidate in music theory at the University of Kentucky, with a research focus on schema and topic theory in Japanese animated film music and the sacred music of Carlo Gesualdo. He has presented at the American Musicological Society Annual Meeting, the North American Baroque Trumpet Competition and Conference, the Historic Brass Society Symposium, the International Trumpet Guild Conference, the South-Central Chapter of the American Musicological Society, and the University of Kentucky History Symposium. He regularly contributes to the International Trumpet Guild Journal and the Historic Brass Society Journal. He was named one of the 2024 Rising Diverse Graduate Scholars in Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine.
Dr. Yuen also holds a Doctorate in Musical Arts in trumpet performance from the University of Kentucky, with an emphasis in historically informed performance practice, and previous degrees from the Eastman School of Music. As a performer, Dr. Yuen is an active member of various historically informed ensembles, including Seven Hills Baroque, die Konzertisten (HK), Ensemble Perihipsous, and the UK Baroque Trumpet Ensemble. He has also performed with Opera Hong Kong, the Brevard Philharmonic, the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra, and the Eastman Wind Ensemble. Commercially, Dr. Yuen has performed with the late international pop star Coco Lee and reggae legend Lee “Scratch” Perry. Dr. Yuen can be heard on the UK Baroque Trumpet Ensemble’s album Baroque and Beyond, the UK Trumpet Ensemble’s album Labyrinth: New Music for Trumpet Ensemble, and Mosaic Foundation’s single Garvey Say.
