University Choir


     

     The Mississippi Valley State University Choir “The Songbirds of the South” is a large auditioned mixed chorus comprised of approximately 65 undergraduate singers from various majors throughout the campus. Nearly every participant in the MVSU choral program receives a choir scholarship. The ensemble performs a diverse choral repertoire representing a variety of periods, styles, and languages and offers a place for students to perform a high standard of choral music. This choir frequently collaborates with music faculty instrumentalists as well as student dancers and performs approximately 6-8 times per year both on campus and throughout Mississippi. The University Choir has performed works by J.S. Bach, Hailstork, Handel, Lauridsen, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Orff, Rutter, Saint-Saëns, and R. Thompson. The ensemble has toured in Chicago, Cincinnati, Jackson (Tenn.), Memphis, New Orleans, Omaha, Seattle, St. Louis, and Vancouver. Overseas destinations have included Brazil and Italy.
