Kumar Receives SAEOPP Scholarship

March 02, 2014

Namarta Kumar is just one of many MVSU students that are making their mark in the community through academic achievements.

She is the 2014 Southeastern Association for Education Opportunity Program Personnel (SAEOPP) Scholarship recipient after competing against East Tennessee State University and the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in an essay contest. The essay discussed how Student Support Services has helped her achieve her academic goals.

“As a non-traditional student, SSS has been a great educational and personal experience for me,” said Kumar. “The staff of SSS believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself.”

Kumar joined SSS during her freshman year at MVSU. Since then, she has become an active University Ambassador and a member of the Mathematics, Computer Information and Sciences (MCIS) Club. She was elected president for the MCIS Club during the 2012-13 academic year. Kumar is a “Highest Achievement” award winner and a presidential scholar. Also, she is a past host for the Lockheed Martin Information Technology Day.

“It’s been very pleasant working with Namarta,” said Martha Smith, SSS director. “Through her smiles and determination, I’ve seen tremendous growth in her. Now, as a senior, she’s more outgoing and more outspoken.”

Kumar will complete her undergraduate studies fall 2014. Upon graduating from MVSU, she plans to pursue her master and doctoral degrees in computer science.

SSS is under the division of academic affairs and funded by the U.S. Department of Education TRIO Programs.
