The MVSU SSS Debate Team found themselves in a unique position of being the only team prepared to compete in the state TRIO debate competition at Jackson State University in March. As a result, the team was selected as the state winners and represented the state of Mississippi in the regional TRIO SSS/McNair Debate Competition.

Four teams out of the eight-state region competed making it very competitive to win, but in the end Mississippi Valley State University placed third, Berea College from Kentucky placed first, the University of South Carolina Upstate placed second, and Cleveland Community College from North Carolina placed fourth.

The MVSU SSS debaters for 2012-2013 were Marcus Fryer, a sophomore social work major from Clarksdale, Miss., Shirlene Hill, a sophomore social work major from Rolling Fork, Miss., and Alexzondra Hurns, a junior mathematics education and science education dual major from Cleveland, Miss. The team is coached by MVSU Student Support Services members - Joyce Roundtree-McCoy, director, Carol Cain, academic advisor, Sandra Brim, administrative assistant/data specialist, and Ilyas Zeynalov, professional tutor/mentor.
