A community champion and business owner will be the keynote speaker during Mississippi Valley State University’s 32nd annual Social Work Conference set for April 12-13.
Sen. Willie Simmons will speak during the opening 8:30 a.m. session on April 12. Simmons serves as Senator of District 13 which includes Bolivar, Humphreys and Sunflower counties. He is the manager of Simmons and Associates Consulting Firm and The Senators’ Place Restaurant in Cleveland.
“Social Work: Promoting Community Strengths and Empowerment,” is the theme of the conference, which will be held in the William Sutton Administration building on the Itta Bena campus. The event is organized by the MVSU Department of Social Work.
Registration for the two-day conference is $70. One day registration is $50. MVSU students can attend both days for a registration fee is $20 and other students for a $35 fee.
Sen. Simmons has been appointed to eight Senate Committees: Corrections, Chair; Agriculture; Appropriations; Economic Development; Environment Protection, Conservation and Water Resources; Fees, Salaries and Administration; Public Health & Welfare; and State Library.
He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Science from Alcorn State University, Master of Education degree in Guidance/Counseling and an Educational Specialist degree from Delta State University.
Sen. Simmons is a member of the National/Regional/State Legislators Association, Mississippi Economic Council Leadership Alumni Association, Mississippi Head Start Friends Association, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Brotherhood of Masons, National and Bolivar County Chapters of the Alcorn Alumni Association, Delta State Alumni Association, Bolivar County Rec-Con League, American Legion Mound Bayou Post, and National Council of Negro Women. He is also a member and trustee of Solomon Chapel A.M.E. Church, Cleveland, Mississippi.
