MVSU to play in SWAC championship

November 04, 2011

ALEXANDRIA, LA - For the second consecutive night, Mississippi Valley State went into overtime and came out on top in a shootout, outshooting Prairie View A&M 4-1 to advance to the finals of the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournanment. The Devilettes will take on Arkansas-Pine Bluff for the automatic bid to the NCAA Division playoffs.

The two teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first 45 minutes. The second half, things heated up on the chilly pitch. MVSU broke the ice when Cassandra Russo took a pass from Shanesse Spratt and scored the first goal of the game in the 83rd minute (82:35).

PVAM wasted little time drawing even. Angie Guillory centered a pass into the box and JD Devany punched it home to tie the game in the 86th minute (85:31) at 1-1.

After 20 minutes of overtime, the issue was unsettled. Like the quarterfinals, the Devilettes were in business. Alexis Mansoor nailed her attempt to put MVSU 1-0. MVSU goalkeeper Shelby Willcocks stopped PVAM shooter Claudia Martinez to preserve the MVSU advantage.

MVSU forward Josee Primeau put the Devilettes up two with a perfectly placed shot. Then Wiilcocks stuffed Katherine Sheppard leaving MVSU up 2-0. MVSU took a commanding 3-0 lead when Biana Vigilante found the corner of the net.

Angie Guillory kept the faint hope alive for Prairie View, but Brooke Feikert put the game away with a goal, sending the Devilettes to the finals.

PVAM outshot the Devilettes 16-6. The Lady Panthers put six shots on goal to MVSU had three shots on-goal.
