PINE BLUFF, Ark. - Jackson State and Mississippi Valley State advanced to the SWAC Soccer Championship game after defeating Alabama State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff, respectively, in semifinal matchups on Friday at UAPB Pumphrey Field.
The two teams will face off in a rematch of the 2008 title game. Mississippi Valley State (MVSU) prevailed over Jackson State, 2-1 in that decision two years ago.
Jackson State (JSU) defeated Alabama State 3-0 in the first semifinal matchup of the day to reach the Championship match while Mississippi Valley State upended Arkansas-Pine Bluff (UAPB), the defending SWAC Champions, 2-0 in the finale on Friday.
Patricia Cartwright paced JSU with two goals in the win over the Hornets. Kayla Boyd and Jency Jose each scored one goal apiece for Mississippi Valley State in their matchup versus UAPB.
When the Tigers and Devilettes met earlier this year, JSU took a 1-0 victory on the road on Oct. 8.
"Mississippi Valley State is a good team," said Jackson State head coach Niji Olagbegi. "We beat MVSU by only one goal earlier in the season. We are going to try and get another win on Sunday."
For Devilettes second year head coach Sonia Curvelo, this is her first championship title run with the team.
"I am very happy and pleased with the team's performance today," Curvelo said. "We played tough and it was a group effort. We fought hard for every ball even though it was our second game in as many days."
The two squads will battle in the Championship game on Sunday at noon at UAPB Pumphrey Field. The champion receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship.
