Box Score De'Kisha Fondon scored 16 points Saturday to lead the Devilettes of Mississippi Valley State to a 66-58 win over Alcorn State in front of a packed house at the Harrison HYPER Complex.
The win propelled Valley (6-9, 3-1 SWAC) into second place in the SWAC behind Southern, who the Devilettes will host Monday at 5:30 p.m.
Khristina Clemons added 12 points off the bench for MVSU and Brittney Lakes put up 11 as the Devilettes won their second straight game. Their only conference loss came on the road at Alabama State, 65-62.
MVSU and Alcorn were tied at 25 at halftime. The Lady Braves took a 27-25 lead on two Renelle Richmond free throws at the 19:27 mark, but it would be the last time Alcorn would be in control. A layup by Lakes tied the game up and another by Fondon gave the Devilettes the lead, which they never relinquished.
The Lady Braves got as close as three points, 46-43, with more than seven minutes left, but a Davina Jefferson three-pointer gave MVSU a larger cushion.
Alcorn's Kiara Ruffin scored five straight points with just over a minute left that gave the Lady Braves a dash of hope, but it didn't last long. Jefferson, Clemons and Alia Frank converted free throws with under a minute remaining that secured MVSU's third conference victory.
Ka'Neisha Smith, who was honored at halftime for scoring her 1,000th career point as a Devilette, had 10 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
Valley shot 41.5 percent and hit 3 of 12 three-pointers. They converted 19 of 27 shots at the charity stripe.
