For the second straight
time this week, Mississippi Valley State left the Harrison HYPER Complex
with a victory. And for the second time in three days, the Devilettes
destroyed its opponent.
This time it was in-state foe Rust
College as MVSU (4-8, 1-0 SWAC) upended the Lady Bearcats, 79-44, in the
non-conference matchup. It marked the second straight blowout win for a
Devilette team that seems to have found its stride. Valley, who
defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 92-50 on Tuesday, have outscored its last
two opponents by a combined 77 points.
The game was special not
only because the Devilettes came out with the victory, but because
senior guard Ka'Neisha Smith scored her 1,000th point. The Sandhill,
Miss. native finished with nine points and five steals in just 15
minutes on the court.
All 13 MVSU players saw action including
freshman A'Shanti Weathers, who scored a career-high 13 points to lead
the Devilettes. Davina Jefferson added 11 off the bench while Olivia
Kennedy chipped in nine.
Ten MVSU players got on the scoreboard.
MVSU shot 41 percent from the field and hit 7 of 25 three-pointers.
They finished 22 of 30 at the charity stripe.
Al'lisha Hudson led Rust with 10 points.
Both MVSU teams will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Montgomery, Ala. to face Alabama State.
