ITTA BENA -- The Devilettes of Mississippi Valley State opened SWAC play
and the new year off right Tuesday, Jan. 3, when they trampled SWAC foe
Arkansas-Pine Bluff 92-50 in front a packed crowd at the Harrison HYPER
Complex.
The Devilettes (3-8, 1-0 SWAC) surpassed the 90-point for the first time
in the 11-year Nate Kilbert era. Lenise Stallings (18 points), Ka’Neisha Smith
(17 points), Davina Jefferson (13 points), Olivia Kennedy (12 points)
and Alia Frank (11 points) all scored in double-figures as MVSU kept the
Golden Lions (0-12, 0-1 SWAC) winless.
The Devilettes shot 47.7 percent from the field and hit 10 of 27
three-pointers. They also converted 20 of 25 free throws. Ten of Valley
12 players got on the scoreboard.
MVSU was in control the entire game and held a 51-21 halftime lead.
Pine Bluff, which hit just 24.6 percent of its shots, was led by Jenise Gentry with 13 points off the bench.
The win builds momentum going into Thursday’s non-conference showdown at
6 p.m. against in-state foe Rust College at the Harrison HYPER Complex.
