MVSU Runs in the 2009 ASU Kickoff Klassic

The Mississippi Valley State women's and men's indoor track and field teams participated in their first meet of the season - the 2009 Arkansas State Kickoff Klassic on December 5, 2009 in Jonesboro, Arkansas.While no team scores were officially tabulated during the meet, there were several good performances by the men and the women, marks that should provide a good cause for hope in the indoor season.

In women's action, Sierra Randle posted a time of 7.32 in the 55-meter dash preliminaries before finishing 9th in the finals with a time of 7.28.  She returned in the 200-meter dash to finish seventh wiht a time of 25.65.  Xandria Cash finished 10th in the event with a mark of 25.96 while Angel Williams was 24th in a finishing time of 26.83. 

Williams was the team's top finisher in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.22 while Cash timed out in 1:01.48.  In the women's 800-meter run, Jodian Burke finished 15th with a time of 2:34.12 while Irene Cherbuet  (12th - 5:46.35) and Ariel Hillard (18th - 6:58.65) participated in the women's mile run.

In the 55-meter hurdles, Randle posted a time of 9.06 while Tiffany Spann registered a mark of 9.58.  The women's 4x400 meter relay team of Angel Williams, Candace Lee, Tiffany Spann and Xandria Cash placed fourth with a time of 4:03.18.  Randle fouled in her second long jump attempt, but her initial jump of 5.61 meters (18 feet, 5 inches) ranked her sixth among the jumpers.  Alicia Bell had a four-jump best of 5.03 meters (16 feet, 6 inches) for 19th place.  In the triple jump, Jo'Nee Collins finished with a mark of 10.02 meters (32 feet, 10 1/2 inches) while Kreanna Hampton had a weight throw toss of 7.11 meters (23 feet, 4 inches).

In men's action, Hakim McClellan (6.57 seconds) and Quinton Weeks (6.61 seconds) qualified for the finals of the 55-meter dash before McClelland (6.49 sec.) finished fourth and Weeks (6.59 sec.) placed ninth.  Marriweather LaDavey (6.78 sec.), Damion Ray (6.83 sec.) and Robert Scott (7.17 sec.) also ran in the preliminaries.

Quinton Weeks (22.47 sec.) placed fifth in the 200-meter dash while McClellan (22.54) and LaDavey (22.75) finished seventh and 11th, respectively.  In the 800-meter run, Caleb Davis finisehd 22nd with a time of 2:04.42 while Victor Kiplagat (4:37.15 - 15th), Davis (4:45.46 - 19th) and Myron Lott (4:53.73 - 20th) participated in the mile run.

Victor Bii finished 10th in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 9:06.73 while Hezron Chepkwony (9:19.11), Jose Lopez (9:21.33) and Robert Hernandez (9:24.50) finished 14th, 16th, and 17th, repsectively.  MVSU's team of Robert Scott, Ladavey, Ray and Weeks finished with a 9th-place time of 3:31.27 in the 4x400 relay.  Ray had a long jump mark of 6.96 meters (22 feet, 10 inches) for fifth place.
