MVSU wins elimination game, fall in tourney final

Devilettes Advance to Tournament Final

IRONDALE, Alabama -- The MVSU Devilette softball team advanced to the 2011 SWAC Softball Tournament title game with a 6-2 win over Southern Lady Jaguars.

The Devilettes got on the board when Ashley Hobbs hit a single to left center field to score Nicole Burr, who laced a double to open the inning.  Southern got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning, scoring on a wild pitch.  In the bottom of the fourth inning, MVSU centerfielder Rachelle Harris laced a home run over the left center field fence (her first true HR of career) giving MVSU a 2-1 lead.  Southern would rebound when Audrey Phillips lined a shot over the left field fence, tying the game at 2-2.

In the sixth inning, Harris hit an RBI single to center field, soring pinch runner Trenicia Cameron.  With Brianna Holmes on first, a head's up double steal following a play scored Harris, giving MVSU a 4-2 lead. Rashundra Brass singled to left center to score Diana Parada and Brianna Holmes making the score 6-2.

For Southern (21-24), Philips, Shawntall Steamer and Kia Williams each had a hit.  Michael Pless worked 5 1/3 innings allowing five earned runs, one walk and striking out one.

For MVSU (26-24), Parada, Burr, Harris and Holmes each had two hits while Brass, Alex Robertson and Ashley Hobbs tallied a hit apiece.  Kim Spivey worked seven innings striking out nine, walking two and allowing three hits and two runs.

MVSU now looks to face Jackson State for the championship.

Devilettes fall to JSU Lady Tigers in championship

IRONDALE, Alabama -- The MVSU Devilettes fell to the Jackson State Lady Tigers 6-2 in the finals of the 2011 SWAC Softball Tournament.

Jackson State (26-20) opened the game with Wendi Reed connecting on a solo home run to left field.  JSU would agains score on a RBI single by Arianna Smith.  The Lady Tigers would score again in the top of the third inning when Farren Wright reached on an error as Reed would score. 

MVSU would break into the scoring column in the bottom of the third inning as Rashundra Brass would triple to score Diana Parada followed by Alex Robertson's RBI single, scoring Brass.

Leading 3-2, Jackson State got a home run from Anesha McClendon, a RBI double from LeEthel Guillory and another solo shot from Wendi Reed for the final tally.

The Lady Tigers saw as Breea Jamerson got the win (13-9) worked four innings walking two and striking out two.  Guillory worked three innings striking out three for the save.

For MVSU, Kim Spivey worked seven innings striking out ten and walking one. Brass and Robertson each went 2-for-4 in the game while Taylor Pleasant and Shana Ladner each had a hit.

The season ends for the Devilettes with a 26-25 overall mark, a 15-2 record in the Eastern Division, and a eighth consecutive trip to the SWAC Tournament finals.

Nicole Burr and Alex Robertson were named to the all-tournament team.
