The Mississippi Valley State Devilette softball team continued toward its goal of the 2011 SWAC championship with a 3-2 victory over the Southern Lady Jaguars.
With a tie contest in the bottom of the seventh, Diana Parada laced a one-out single to left field. After Rashundra Brass reached on a fielder's choice to move Parada to second, Alex Robertson reached safely pushing Parada to third. Nicole Burr then singled to score Parada for the winning run.
MVSU (25-23) was paced by Shana Ladner going 3-for-3 while Diana Parada and Nicole Burr each went 2-for-4. Parada scored two runs in the game - including the game-winning tally.
For Southern (19-23), Kiah Williams went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two runs driven in. Williams connected on a two-run blast off MVSU starter Kim Spivey in the top of the sixth. Audrey Phillips went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Victoria Stewart also went 1-for-3 in the game.
The Devilettes will now move to Saturday action at 3:30 pm in which they will take on the winner of the Alabama State/Southern contest. The Lady Hornets and Lady Jaguars will meet in an elimination contest at 1 pm.
