May 05, 2011

IRONDALE, Alabama -- The Mississippi Valley State Devilette softball team began its quest of the 2011 SWAC Tournament title as they earned a 6-0 victory over the Grambling State Lady Tigers.

The number one seed in the Eastern Division, MVSU (24-23) was led by Rashundra Brass, Alex Robertson and Nicole Burr.  All three finished the game going 2-for-4, two days after the trio was named to the all-conference team.

Shana Ladner, Ashley Hobbs and Rachelle each had a hit for the Devilettes.

While Brass and Burr each had doubles in the contest, it was Robertson who began the scoring with a two-run blast in the first inning.  With one out in the first inning and Brass on second after a double, Robertson homered to left field giving MVSU a 2-0 lead.

In the second, after singles by Ladner and Hobbs, Harris would single to score Ladner.  A Brianna Holmes sacrifice bunt would score Hobbs and a Diana Parada fielder's choice would score Harris.  Parada would score on a error by the GSU third baseman.

Devyn Pearl earned her fifth win (5-4) of the season, going a complete game seven innings allowing three hits, three walks and striking out four.

The Devilettes return to the field on Friday, May 6 at 3:30 pm for a reunion-rivalry of sort as they take on the Southern Lady Jaguars
