The Mississippi Valley State Devilette softball team will travel to Birmingham, Ala., to take on the Samford Bulldogs in non-conference action on Tuesday, April 26 with the first pitch set for 4 p.m.
Samford and MVSU have only met four times on the diamond. The Bulldogs hold a 3-1 advantage in the all-time series, with the Devilettes earning their first win in the series with a 6-4 victory. In the four meetings between the Devilettes and Bulldogs, the margin of victory has not been more than two runs in any contest.
MVSU (22-21, 15-2 SWAC) enters the game on a three-game losing streak after falling on the road at #25 Auburn on April 23. The Devilettes are led at the plate by 3B Alex Robertson and 1B Shana Ladner. Robertson leads the team in batting average (.393), runs (30) and home runs(5-tied for lead) while being second in runs batted in (28). Ladner, who has become a solid defensive player at first base, is averaging .333 on the season with 41 hits, 16 runs scored, four doubles and two home runs.
On the mound for the Devilettes, sophomore RHP Kim Spivey has a league-high 14 wins along with a 3.65 E.R.A (3rd in league), 157 1/3 innings pitched and 130 strikeouts thrown.
Robyn Harmon continues to lead all Bulldogs ((11-34, 7-11 SoCon) in batting with a .297 average at the plate. She hit her fourth home run of the year in game two against the Mountaineers this weekend and she is second on the team behind Amanda Jordan in RBI with 16. Jordan boasts 17 RBI. Harmon also leads the team, along with Kayla Shaffer, in hits with 30. Shaffer also leads the Bulldogs in runs scored with 20 and stolen bases with seven.
Kayla Burris (8-14), Samford's weekend starter for the first and third games, still leads all pitchers with a 4.45 ERA. She boasts 91 strikeouts in 140 innings of work. She has started 23 of Samford's 45 games played and has pitched 16 complete games, including two shutouts.
