Box Score ITTA BENA -- Over the last month, Mississippi Valley State has gotten accustomed to two things: winning games, and Terrence Joyner leading them to those victories.
Saturday night was no different, as the senior standout matched a season-high 22 points to lead the Delta Devils to a 85-66 win over the Braves of Alcorn State.
Joyner, who hit 5
of 9 three-pointers on the night, went 7-of-12 and had three steals
before fouling out late in the game. His 22 points matched a season-high
that he recorded against South Carolina on Nov. 22. He has scored in double-figures in 14 of 16 games this season.
Falando Jones and Paul Crosby chipped in 14 points apiece and the Delta Devils (5-11, 4-0 SWAC) stayed unbeaten in conference play. MVSU is tied for first place with Texas Southern.
Alcorn (3-13, 1-4 SWAC) led through the first four minutes of the game, but Valley took a 6-4 lead following a Paul Crosby three-pointer with 15:41 left in the first quarter. MVSU led for the rest of the game.
Joyner knocked down a three and Crosby hit another to give the Delta Devils a 15-6 lead and put them on a 11-3 run. MVSU led by as many as 17 points before going into halftime with a 40-26 advantage.
Valley stretched its lead to as many as 21 before Alcorn closed the gap to 12 on an Ian Francis three throw. Joyner quickly quieted Brave fans when he nailed another three-pointer to snatch the momentum back.
MVSU shot 45 percent (27 of 60) and hit 12 of 32 shots from downtown. They went 70.4 percent from the free throw line (19 of 27).
JaMichael Hawkins paced the Braves with 15 points while Twann Oakley and Xavian Rimmer chipped in 13 each.
MVSU will host Southern University on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
