HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Oct. 8) — Mississippi Valley State quarterback Garrick Jones returned from an ankle injury Saturday to throw for 177 yards and two touchdowns, but it wasn't enough to secure Valley's first victory of the season as Alabama A&M defeated the Delta Devils, 37-14, at Louis Crews Stadium.
The Bulldogs (4-2, 3-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference) marched out to a 28-0 lead early in the second quarter before the Delta Devils (0-6, 0-5 SWAC) put up their first points of the game on a 34-yard pass from Jones to Joseph Hardnett.
But A&M scored twice more — on a 27-yard pass from Deaunte Mason to Kenneth Harris and on a safety — to go into the locker room with a 37-7 lead.
Kenneth Dabney put an end to the game's scoring with 8:54 left when Jones connected with him on a 16-yard pass.
MVSU receiver Paul Cox had another productive performance with six catches for 116 yards. Bulldogs quarterback Mason finished 16 of 26 for 210 yards and three scores,
MVSU will be back in action this Saturday, October 15, when they host Jackson State at 2 p.m. at Rice-Totten Stadium.
