ITTA BENA (Oct. 1) — If the last two weeks are a sign, Mississippi Valley State's first football victory isn't far away.
The Delta Devils (0-5, 0-4 Southwestern Athletic Conference) suffered a hard-fought 28-21 loss at hands of Southern University (2-3, 2-1 SWAC) despite tying the game at 21 early in the fourth quarter.
With Garrick Jones out nursing an injury, Marvin Pittman filled in for the junior quarterback and was second on the team in rushing with 73 yards and a touchdown.
Southern's lead was never more than seven points throughout the game. The Jaguars scored what would turn out to be the game-winning TD with over 11 minutes left on a 58-yard pass fro J.P. Douglas to LaQuinton Evans that gave the visiting Jags a 28-21 lead.
The Delta Devils forced four Southern turnovers, including two interceptions — both by Michael Boykins, who had a 34-yard interception for a score late in the first quarter.
Trey Bateaste led Valley with 86 rushing yards and a TD while Brandon Stansell added 68 yards on the ground. Paul Cox chipped in three catches for 28 yards.
Next Saturday on Oct. 8, the Delta Devils travel to face Alabama A&M. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Louis Crews Stadium.
