PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — Mississippi Valley State had its best offensive output of the season Saturday night, but came up a little short. The Delta Devils (0-4, 0-3 SWAC) fell 43-34 to Prairie View A&M despite a spectacular performance from its offensive leaders.
Garrick Jones (7-of-14 for 111 yards and 2 TDs) and Marvin Pittman (8-of-9 for 81 yards and 2 TDs) had a great night along with Paul Cox, who had six receptions for 137 yards and two scores.
J.J. Thurman and Dytanyl Greer also scored their first touchdowns as Delta Devils. Greer's score came late in the second quarter on a 4-yard pass from Jones. Thurman's TD came with nearly four minutes left in the third quarter on a 13-yard toss from Pittman.
Valley's special team unit even got in on the action. Kenneth Dabney had a 80-yard kickoff return and finished with 198 kick return yards on four returns. Meanwhile, the one-two punch of Brandon Stansell (10 carries, 64 yards) and Trey Bateaste (18 carries, 66 yards, TD) played exceptionally well.
The Panthers, however, outgained the Delta Devils 550 to 278 with Prairie View quarterback Jerry Lovelock leading the way with 242 yards and two TDs on 19 of 23 passes.
MVSU will have another shot at getting their first victory when they host Southern University Saturday at Rice-Totten Stadium at 2 p.m.
