Alcorn State downs Delta Devils

September 19, 2011
LORMAN -- Mississippi Valley State put up a fight, but Alcorn State came out victorious Saturday as the Braves defeated the Delta Devils, 39-14.

MVSU (0-3, 0-2 Southwestern Athletic Conference) did get its first touchdown of the year, which came in the second quarter on a 8-yard pass from Garrick Jones to Paul Cox.

Alcorn State (1-2, 1-0 SWAC) led 10-7 at halftime, but used a balanced attack in the second half to shoot past the Delta Devils. MVSU's second score came midway through the third quarter on a Marvin Pittman quarterback keeper. But Alcorn State answered back with three scores, including 55 and 72-yard TD passes. Arturo Tamayo ended the game's scoring with a 21-yard field goal with nearly three minutes left in the game.

The Delta Devils make some positive steps with Trey Bateaste having a break-out game — 16 carries for 118 yards. Brandon Stansell added 51 yards on 17 attempts.

And for the second straight week, MVSU played three quarterbacks — Jones, Pittman and Eddie Ivory. Jones started the game and led the pack with 73 yards for a TD and an interception on 8 of 13 passes. Paul Cox hauled in three catches for 56 yards and a score to pace MVSU receivers. Kenneth Dabney chipped in three catches for 34 yards.

Valley will be at Prairie View A&M Saturday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
