ITTA BENA (Sept. 10) — It was another tough outing for Mississippi Valley State here Saturday, as the Delta Devils were blanked by Murray State, 39-0.
In the first-ever meeting between the two schools, the Racers raced out to a 9-0 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. Murray State's (1-1) first TD came on a 15-yard run by Mike Harris with 49 seconds left in the first quarter. Kienan Cullen nailed a 23-yard field goal and Jeffrey Richard blocked a Carlos Sanchez punt in the endzone and recovered it for a score to give Murray State a 19-0 lead at halftime.
The Racers, of the Ohio Valley Conference, scored three more times in the second half, including a 33-yard pass to Ja-Von Trotter from backup quarterback Graham Craig that sealed the victory for Murray State. Murray State's Casey Brockman passed for 238 yards and a TD on 21-of-33 passes while Hanni Beauford hauled in seven catches for 111 yards. Mike Harris paced the Racers with 104 yards and two scores on the ground.
For the second straight week the Delta Devils (0-2) used more than one quarterback. This time they had to after Garrick Jones left the game with an injury. Jones' replacement, Eddie Ivory, finished with 63 passing yards on 8-of-12 attempts. Brandon Stansell paced MVSU with 41 rushing yards and six catches for 68 yards. Paul Cox chipped in five receptions for 44 yards while Kenneth Dabney had five grabs for 23 yards. On the defensive side of the ball, Javaris Fritz had another good outing. The Tarrant, Ala. native had six tackles and 1.5 sacks.
The Delta Devils will be at Alcorn State on Sept. 17 for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
