ITTA BENA (Sept. 3, 2011) — Garrick Jones rushed for 113 yards and threw for another 121 in his Valley debut, but it wasn't enough to capture Karl Morgan's first victory as head coach as Alabama State defeated the Delta Devils, 41-9, in the 2011 season opener.
MVSU (0-1) started the season off with a bang, running out to a 6-0 lead midway through the first quarter thanks to two Carlos Sanchez field goals (30 and 32 yards). But MVSU had a hard time stopping ASU quarterback Greg Jenkins and receiver Andrews, who connected for three straight touchdowns to give the Hornets a 21-6 halftime lead. Like in the first half, the Delta Devils were the first to put up points in the second half when Sanchez hit his third field goal of the day — this time from 32 yards away. But the Hornets (1-0) added 20 straight points — including a 12-yard Jenkins TD run and a 3-yard touchdown toss to T.C. McWilliams from backup quarterback Devin Dominquez — to keep the Delta Devils at bay.
MVSU quarterback Jones, a Coahoma Community College transfer, completed 8-of-20 passes for 121 yards and two interceptions. His favorite target, senior Paul Cox, hauled in four receptions for 86 yards, including a 51-yard bomb from Jones on a flea-flicker. Eddie Ivory came in for Jones in the fourth quarter and completed 7-of-11 passes for 51 yards. Brandell Stansell had five catches for 26 yards and Kenneth Dabney added four receptions for 43 yards. Defensively, Terrell Johnson and Rico Mazique had eight tackles apiece. Javaris Fritz added two sacks to go with seven tackles.
Turnovers also hurt the Delta Devils, who lost five fumbles on the night. ASU receiver Andrews stole the show, finishing with 10 catches for 104 yards and three scores.
Next up for MVSU is Murray State, who the Delta Devils will host Sept. 10 at 4 p.m.
