Devils picked to finish 5th in SWAC East
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- The preseason predictions continue for the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devil football team as honors and the predicted order of finish was announced at the 2011 SWAC Football Media Day held at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Center in Birmingham.
The preseason teams along with the predicted order of finish was chosen in a poll of league coaches, sports information directors and selected media.
Safety Carlos Hollis was selected to the All-SWAC preseason second team while the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils were tabbed to finish fifth in the SWAC's Eastern Division.Hollis (6-0, 180, Jr., Birmingham, Ala./Minor High) played in ten games finishing the season with 52 tackles - 26 of which were solo. He also tallied 1.5 tackles for loss, one sack, two interceptions and a pass breakup. During the season opener, he registered 10 tackles, one sack and a pass breakup at Alabama State. He also garnered seven tackles at South Carolina State, six stops at both Southern and Texas Southern and 12 tackles and an interception against Alabama A&M.
Following last season, the Devils were picked to finish fifth in the division. Jackson State was chosen first with 88 points (13 first-place votes), followed by Alcorn State (84 pts; six first-place votes), Alabama State (82 points; three first-place votes), Alabama A&M (62 points; one first-place vote) and MVSU. The Devils received 27 points in the poll and no first-place votes.
The Delta Devils open the season with a September 3rd home game against Alabama State.
