Devils Split with Alcorn State

ITTA BENA, Mississippi -- After seeing its potential home opener washed away due to inclement weather on Saturday, the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils opened the home portion of their schedule with a doubleheader against in-state rival Alcorn State.

In the first game of the day, the Braves used a two-run first inning and a three-run seventh frame to hold off the MVSU Delta Devils 6-3.

ASU's Butler singled to right field to score Cole Vicars and Eduardo Gonzalez, both who walked to get on base.  In the fourth inning, MVSU got on the board when Jerry Hildredth (reached on a walk) scored on a Matt Burton single.  Alcorn State would add a run in the top of the fifth inning as  Joshua Powell would score on a Gonzalez sacrifice fly to right field.

In the seventh inning, Brandon Hollins would single up he middle to score Vicars and Angelss Rosa.  With runners on first and third, the Braves would pull off a double steal to score Hollins.   In the eighth, MVSU's Michael Lowe would ground out to shortstop scoring Scott Hornstra.

For Alcorn State (3-6, 1-0 SWAC), Vicars went 2-for-3 scoring twice while Rosa went 3-for-4 with a run scored.  For MVSU (0-10, 1-0 SWAC), Hornstra went 1-for-3 with a run scored.  Alcorn State's Steve Easter worked eight innings with four strikeouts for the win while Harrison Gary worked the ninth for his second save of the season.  David Brauhn worked 4 1/3 innings striking out two, taking the loss for MVSU.

In the second game, MVSU scored first, used a four-run fifth inning and a two-run seventh inning to earn their first win of the season with a 7-4 victory.

In the bottom of the first, Jerry Hildreth scored on a Scott Hornstra single up the middle.  In the top of the second, ASU's Rowan scored when Angelss Rosa singled down the left field line.

With the score tied 1-1, Alcorn State went ahead in the third inning scoring three runs.  The inning was capped when Butler doubled down the left field line scoring Vicars and Hollins.  MVSU would rebound in the fifth inning plating four runs.  Ricky Hefflinger would score on a Derek Wallace single.  Wallace later scored when Nick Fangonilo pulled out the squeeze play down the first base line.  With two outs in the frame, Jon Neuberger scored when Hornstra reached on a fielding error before Luke Walker walked with the bases loaded to plate Fangonilo.

The Delta Devils would add two more runs in the bottom of the seventh as Chris Norman would double to score Hornstra and Matt Burton.

For MVSU (1-10, 1-1 SWAC), Eric Dowell worked 6 2/3 innings striking out nine and walking one for his first win of the season (1-2).  Steven Barnes worked innings eight and nine for the save.  For Alcorn State (3-7, 1-1) Troy Williams pitched seven innings allowing seven hits and striking out three for the loss.

MVSU will travel to Starkville, Mississippi for a Tuesday, March 8 contest against Mississippi State.  First pitch is scheduled for 4 pm.
