MVSU downs Alcorn State 6-4

April 11, 2010

ITTA BENA, Mississippi -- The Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils got back in the title hunt for the SWAC's Eastern Division with a 6-4 victory over the visiting Alcorn State Braves.

MVSU's Steven Barnes worked 6 2/3 innings of five-hit baseball striking out six and walking one.  Cody Parker struck out one in relief while David Brauhn earned his first save of the season allowing one hit in an inning pitched.

Alcorn State got on the board in the third inning when two MVSU fielding errors put runners on base.  The Braves' three-run inning was capped by David Reed's two-run single to center field.

The bottom of the fourth inning was big for MVSU as they scored all six of their runs in the frame.  With one out, Curtis Ford reached on a single up the middle before Jack Edmondson's single put runners on first and third.  After a walk and a strikeout, Chris Herron and Kylie Ming each walked to get on base - pushing runners across home.  Jerry's Hildreth's single scored a run before Paul Olson's double to right center field scored three.

Alcorn State would add another run in the fifth. Cole Vicars led the inning with a triple and scored on a double play later in the frame.

Jerry Hildreth went 4-for-4 in the game - pushing his hitting streak to 20 consecutive games while Paul Olson is on a five-game hitting streak.

The Delta Devils are schedule for a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader at Tougaloo College before returning home Saturday and Sunday to Magnolia Field for another Eastern Division series - against the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M.
