MVSU top Delta State 9-4

March 23, 2010

ITTA BENA, Mississippi -- The MVSU Delta Devils used 12 hits and two unfortunate errors by Delta State to down the Statesmen 9-4 Tuesday afternoon at MVSU’s Magnolia Field.

After a scoreless first inning, the Devils plated three runs.  After Jack Edmondson reached on an error, he would score on a wild pitch three batters later.  Donquarious Farmer would then hit a two-RBI single down the right field line to score Chris Herron (single up the middle) and Allan Cheek (hit by pitch).

Delta State would return the scoring by plating three runs in the top of the third inning – knotting the score at 3-3.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Devils would again change the scoreboard.  With one out in the frame, Farmer would reach on a single to left center field.  After Jerry Hildreth was hit by a pitch, both players would steal a base putting runners on second and third with one down.  Luke Walker would reach on a fielder’s choice which placed Farmer in a rundown between third base and home.  However, a interference call on the third baseman allowed Farmer to score.  A Curtis Ford single to left would score Hildreth and a sacrifice bunt by Paul Olson would score Ford to put MVSU up 7-3.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Chris Herron would lace a double to right center field to score Edmondson and Nick Fangonilo for a 9-3 lead.  Delta State would get a late inning home run to right field by Chase Blanchard for the final run decision.

Steven Barnes worked six innings of eight-hit, two-strikeout baseball for his first win of the season.  Keaton LeBlanc and Jesus Aleman each struck out two batters in relief action.
