Public relations is rooted in a democratic society where people have freedom to debate and to make decisions. Private and public organizations depend on good relations with groups and individuals whose opinions, decisions, and actions affect the vitality and survival of those organizations. Contemporary public relations practice offers sifnificant opportunities for service to society.
Public relations is a rapidly growing professional field. In 1990, there were 162,000 people in practice. With specialization in public relations one can work for industries such as automotive, manufacturing, mining; public relations firms; advertising agencies; utilities; banks; insurance companies; federal, state, or local government; transportation; tourism; entertainment; health care agencies; educational institutions; and religious and charitable institutions.
