Elementary Education Course Description

*Restricted  Course - Requires admittance to Teacher Education

ED 102  General Psychology.  An introductory course which surveys the various areas of psychology and provides a basic foundation for other courses. (3 hrs.)

ED 105 Education Computing.  The course is designed to prepare prospective teachers to use technology and integrate technology into the curriculum. Prerequisites: OA 103 or Pass Departmental Computer Skills test. (3 hrs.)

ED 191 Education Seminar.  The course is designed to orient freshmen to the university, the college, as well as study techniques and strategies, vocabulary development, reading comprehension, and test-taking skills. (1 hr.)

ED 201 Foundations of Education.  A survey of the educational movements from ancient to modern times with emphasis on the philosophical and historical ideas and facts that have influenced educational administration, curriculum, and methods.  Prerequisite: ED 102.(3 hrs.)

ED 204 Critical Thinking and Problem Solving. The course provides opportunities for students to develop thinking and problem solving skills required for success in teaching and instructional planning by teaching the candidates effective means for decision making, problem solving and developing systematic skills for making meaningful decisions.  Students will be given the opportunity to develop the ability to identify a problem and develop a plan for solving that problem.  This course must be completed prior to taking ED380: Instructional Planning and Adaptive Instruction.  (3 hrs.)

ED 214 Early Literacy I. This course focuses on concepts, materials and teaching strategies for oral language development and systematic early reading and writing instruction.  Emphasis will be placed on literacy through speaking, reading and writing.  Candidates will be expected to learn to speak using academic language (Standard English) so that it will be modeled within the classroom.  The relationship of language to reading and writing will be explored and the research related to the importance of appropriate language use as a foundation for teaching reading will be discussed.  Basic skills in reading and writing techniques will be included as well.  Prerequisite: Completion of 45 hours of General Education Course work. (3 hrs.)

ED 280 Introduction to Teaching.  An introduction to the field of education, teaching, and all the procedures and processes which impact the modern classroom. (3 hrs.)

ED 301 Instructional Media.  This course is designed to prepare students to develop, design and use technology-based instructional material.  Candidates will also be introduced to electronic portfolios and will learn the essential skills for portfolio development using a variety of methods including video, audio, and other media formats. Prerequisite: ED 105. (3 hrs.)

*ED 302 Educational Psychology.  This course focuses on the principles and theories of child development and learning. There is emphasis on the principles of theories related to the cognitive, social, emotional, and moral development of the child. A comparison of different learning theories and their relationship to each other is also addressed. Research on the practices associated with improving learning for ALL students and the accommodation for learning styles and learning differences is included. Candidates are also made aware of the importance of research and scientific inquiry to the practice of teaching and its impact on motivation, classroom management, and effective practice. (3 hrs.)

ED 303 Advanced Teacher Preparation.  This class is designed for students who need assistance in improving the skills necessary for completion of the Praxis I exam.  This class may be taken in addition to the hours required for a degree in Teacher Education and will be restricted to those students who have taken the Praxis, worked with Plato and are still having problems passing the exam.  Students will present Praxis sub-scores so that appropriate diagnosis and remediation can be developed for areas of weakness.  Prerequisite: Restricted.  This class can only be taken with the approval of the Department Chair. (3 hrs.)

*ED 305 Test and Measurement.  This course is designed to provide the candidate with the appropriate information and skills necessary for developing classroom assessments including formative and summative assessments, observations, rubric development, and other means of assessing student work within the elementary/secondary classroom.  Attention is also given to understanding the basic concepts of measurement and the interpretation of Standard Scores as they relate to educational practices and decisions.  Prerequisite: ED 102, ED280 (3 hrs.)

*ED 310 Early Literacy II.  This course is a continuation of Early Literacy I and focuses on the continued development of spoken language and reading with emphasis on the concepts, materials, and teaching strategies for teaching appropriate oral language development and early systematic reading and writing instruction specific to vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.  Prerequisite: ED214 (Early Literacy I) and Co-Requisite: ED 380 (Instructional Planning and Adapting Instruction. Admission to Teacher Education (3 hrs.)

*ED 311 Methods & Materials for Teaching Math in the Elementary School.  This course is designed for teaching candidates the appropriate methods and materials for teaching Math in the Elementary School. The course includes development of lesson plans, teaching units as well as appropriate theory, research and best practices for teaching math.  Field experiences are required.  Prerequisites: ED280 (Introduction to Teaching), ED 380 (Instructional Planning and Adapting Instruction), MA 111 (College Algebra), MA 132 (Math Concepts II), MA 333 (Math Concepts III) (3 hrs.)

*ED 312: Methods & Materials for Teaching Science in the Elementary Classroom. This course is designed for teaching candidates the appropriate methods and materials for teaching Science in the Elementary School.  The course includes development of lesson plans, teaching units, as well as appropriate theory, research and best practices for teaching science interactively in the elementary classroom.  Field experiences that include micro-teaching units in the P-12 classroom are included.  Prerequisites: ED280 (Introduction to Teaching), ED 380 (Instructional Planning and Adapting Instruction), SC 151(Survey of Biological Science), SC 261 (Survey of Physical Science) (3 hrs.) 

*ED 315 Methods & Materials for Teaching Reading  in Elementary School.  This course is designed to teach candidates the current and traditional methods of teaching reading in the elementary school.  The course includes development of lesson plans, teaching units, development and use of instructional materials, as well as appropriate theory, research and best practices for teaching reading.  Field experience that includes micro-teaching in the P-12classroom is included.  Prerequisites: ED 280 (Introduction to Teaching), ED 380 (Instructional Planning and Adapting Instruction), ED 214 (Early Literacy I), ED 301 (Early Literacy II) (3 hrs.)

*ED 380 Instructional Planning & Adaptive Instruction. This course is designed to provide a foundation for planning and preparing instruction, integrating classroom management techniques, developing adaptive instructional and management strategies, and understanding how to adapt to classroom learning environments for diverse learners.  The class will also include instruction and practice of professional behaviors and time management as well as planning effective and realistic goals, developing lesson plans based on the "whole" child, and developing realistic and measurable objectives.  This class will be a prerequisite for any professional class in the program.  Prerequisites: ED 280 (Introduction to Teaching), successful completion of Praxis II Exam and admission to Teacher Education (3 hrs.)

*ED 385 Teaching in Middle and High School. This course is designed to focus on the particular needs of students in the middle or high school.  Particular attention will be given to developmental needs, social needs, and academic needs of the adolescent child.  Effective instructional strategies and best practices for teaching middle and high school students will be discussed. (3 hrs.)

ED 393 Global and Multi-Cultural Education.  This course is designed to provide a survey of global and multi-cultural issues and expose students to other cultures.  Prerequisite: ED 204 (Critical Thinking and Problem Solving), ED280(Introduction to Teaching) (3 hrs.)

*ED404 Methods & Materials for Teaching Social Sciences in the Elementary School. This course is designed to teach candidates the current and traditional methods of teaching social studies in the elementary school.  The course includes the development of lesson plans, teaching units, development and use of instructional materials, as well as appropriate theory, research and best practices for teaching social studies.  Field experience includes micro-teaching in the P-12 classroom. Prerequisites ED280 (Introduction to Teaching), ED380 (Instructional Planning and Adapting Instruction), HI 105 (Early Western Civilization), HI 106 (Late Western Civilization), HI 201 (Early American History), HI 202 (Modern American History)  (3 hrs.) 

**ED 405 Directed Teaching Grades K-4; 4-8.  The teacher candidate is required to do 12 weeks of practicum under the supervision of a certified teacher in the candidate's content area.  Prospective teacher education graduates must participate in a pre-seminar, a mid-term, and a post-seminar before competing student teaching.  Prerequisites: Completion of all course work, Praxis I and II. (12 hrs.)

**ED 409 Directed Teaching in the Secondary Schools. The teacher candidate is required to do 12 weeks of practicum under the supervision of a certified teacher in the candidate's content area.  Prospective teacher education graduates must participate in a pre-seminar, a mid-term, and a post-seminar before completing student teaching.  Prerequisites: Completion of all course work, Praxis I and II (12 hrs.)

*ED 411 Diagnostic & Remedial Reading. Techniques of diagnosing and remediation reading difficulties and hands-on experiences with inventories and other diagnostic instruments are covered in this course. Prerequisites: ED 214 (Early Literacy I), ED 310 (Early Literacy II) Field experience required. (3 hrs.)

*ED 413 Methods & Materials for Teaching Language Arts & Literature in the Elementary School.  This course is designed for teaching candidates the current and traditional methods and materials for Language Arts and Literature in the Elementary School.  This course includes development of lesson plans, teaching units, as well as appropriate theory, research and best practices for teaching Language Arts.  Prerequisites: ED 280 (Introduction to Teaching), ED 380 (Instructional Planning and Adapting Instruction), ED 214 (Early Literacy I), ED 310 (Early Literacy II) Field experience required. (3 hrs.)

*ED 420 Classroom Management.  This course is designed to equip prospective teachers with the techniques and skills for dealing with classroom situations, discipline and problems.  Prerequisites: ED 280 (Introduction to Teaching), ED380 (Instructional Planning and Adapting Instruction), and Admission to Teacher Education. (3 hrs.)

*ED 430 Reading in the Content Areas. The course covers reading content methods, including strategies, materials, and procedures for identifying the reading attainments and needs of individual students.  Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education (3 hrs.)
